A Malibu hardscape contractor for canyon and coast
Genesis builds for Malibu homeowners from the canyon lots off Kanan and Malibu Canyon roads to the bluff-top estates of Point Dume and Serra Retreat. Our yard is in Moorpark, with Westlake Village roughly the halfway point, so a Malibu project is a real but manageable reach for our crew. The owner runs your estimate in person.
Malibu is unlike any inland market. Steep clay slopes, extreme wildfire exposure, salt air, and California Coastal Commission oversight all shape the work here. Genesis plans for those conditions rather than treating a Malibu lot like a flat suburban yard.

Most Malibu projects combine several of these. Genesis designs and installs all of them with a single dedicated crew, on one schedule.
Why a Malibu lot needs a different approach
Malibu combines steep coastal slopes, the most extreme fire exposure in the region, and coastal permitting most inland contractors never touch. All of it changes how hardscape should be built here.
Steep clay slopes and slope stability
Malibu sits on Santa Monica Mountains terrain of loosely packed shale and sandstone with steep clay slopes that can move, especially after fire strips the vegetation. On ground like this, engineered subgrade, drainage, and retaining walls are load-bearing needs, not upsells, and rigid poured concrete cracks as the slope shifts. Interlocking pavers flex on a compacted base and can be lifted and reset. A geotechnical report governs any specific hillside lot.

Fire hardening built into the hardscape
Malibu sits in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone and has lived through Woolsey and more recent fires. The city’s fire-resistant landscaping rules call for non-combustible ground cover, gravel, decomposed granite, and hardscape, in the first five feet around the home, not bark or mulch. That turns paver patios, stone, and gravel into genuine fire hardening. We design Malibu hardscape with that ember-resistant zone in mind.
Coastal exposure and Coastal Commission permitting
Much of Malibu falls under California Coastal Commission jurisdiction, so hardscape in the coastal zone can require a Coastal Development Permit and review most inland contractors never deal with. Salt air on beachfront and bluff lots also favors sealed pavers and corrosion-aware fixtures. We plan for both the permitting and the coastal exposure so the work holds up and gets approved.

Interlocking pavers versus poured concrete on Malibu slopes
| What matters | Interlocking pavers | Poured concrete |
|---|---|---|
| Movement on steep coastal soil | Flex on an engineered base without cracking | Cracks as the ground moves |
| Repairs | Lift and reset individual pavers, no patch line | Cut and pour a mismatched patch |
| Access to buried lines | Pull up, reach the line, relay the same pavers | Break the slab and re-pour |
| Drainage options | Permeable options let water pass through | Sheds water, needs separate drainage |
| Resale and curb appeal | High-end finish, strong return at resale | Utility finish |
The integrated design-build most paver companies in Malibu can’t match
Most paver contractors near you are franchises that install pavers and hand off everything else. Genesis designs and builds the entire outdoor space with one accountable crew. A Genesis design consultant runs the estimate in person, your designer draws the plan, and the same team installs the pavers, the stone veneer, the BBQ island, and the lighting on one schedule. It is the reason a Malibu project stays coordinated instead of turning into three subcontractors pointing at each other.

A Malibu project can involve California Coastal Commission review, city fire-hardening rules, and, in the gated enclaves, homeowner association design review. Genesis prepares the drawings, material selections, and samples these reviews need, and plans the hardscape to satisfy the ember-resistant zone and coastal requirements from the start, rather than discovering them mid-project.

Building for Malibu since 1993
Malibu stretches along the Los Angeles County coast where the Santa Monica Mountains meet the Pacific, a market of canyon lots, bluff-top estates, and beachfront enclaves like Point Dume, Serra Retreat, and Malibu Colony. It is coastal luxury on some of the most demanding terrain in the region.
That terrain is exactly why local, experienced hardscape matters here. Steep clay slopes, extreme wildfire exposure, salt air, and coastal permitting each ask something specific of a builder. Genesis brings hillside and fire-country experience from just over the hills in Ventura County, and builds Malibu hardscape for the way these coastal lots actually sit on the land.
What Genesis customers say

“Roger showed up for the estimate in the rain and gave us a quote that was very reasonable. He helped us choose the stone and color. We had the driveway and front walkway done too.”
“Fernando explained the entire process and the sales tactics that others like System Pavers use to upsell. If you want honest advice and good work, go with Genesis.”
“Daniel led us from design through execution, and the BBQ island he designed is money. All my friends love it.”
“Fernando and his crew did an outstanding job creating beautiful tier planters with veneer and white capstones. We received many compliments from our neighbors.”
“I had some sunken areas in the pavers. Genesis kindly sent their crew and fixed it. Happy with their service and ethics.”
